The UK is set to experience some extremely cold weather in Winter 2022/23. While this unusually cold and damp weather can be enjoyed in the day, many of us struggle to sleep in uncomfortably cold bedrooms at night. We're here to help you understand how insulating your loft or roof can help you save on energy bills. Why does my home get so cold in Winter? Lofts get very cold in the winter, with temperatures often -5 degrees Celsius. As the sun rarely shines directly onto the roof’s dark surfaces throughout the short days, heat is absorbed and radiated into the roof space. Without adequate insulation, this temperature accumulated in the daytime can quickly transfer into any bedrooms on the upper floor. How does insulation help me save on energy bills? Insulation offers many benefits, reducing heat loss, minimising energy bills and improving our contribution to protecting the environment. By adding insulation to walls, roofs, ceilings and floors, you will be able to reduce your energy bills as it will help your home retain up to 80% of the heating and cooling that would otherwise be lost. It enables you to stay warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer. Is the cost of installing or repairing insulation worth it? The answer is yes, the money you save in the long term will be substantial. How can you stay warm in the winter? Minimising condensation and moisture is a good starting point for keeping warm in the winter. Insulation of hot water pipes and boiler connections to hot water cylinders will help manage internal gains. How can I insulate my home? To insulate a cold house, the best thing to do is purge heat through ventilation. Although easier said than done – particularly in an urban setting – doors, windows and rooflights should be opened to encourage a cross-breeze that replaces the air in the building. This is best done at night, when the air outside is more likely to be cooler than the air inside the house. We also recommend measuring your existing loft insulation. It should be at least 270mm thick. Next, check that the insulation is laid evenly across the loft space and by redistribute it if necessary. If any areas still need a top up, our specialists are on call, so get in touch and we will allocate one of our loft insulation installers to schedule a free onsite inspection and quote.
