Damage to your roof is something that none of us want to experience. When a roof does become damaged, this can impact your family’s health and cause further damage to the inside of your property. Of course, you’ll want to regularly inspect your roofing for any damage, especially after severe weather conditions. However, by following the tips listed below, you can reduce the chance of unwanted roofing damage.
1. Deal with Overhanging Trees Weather conditions have a huge impact on roof damage, which can be heightened by overhanging trees. By maintaining or removing dangerous greenery nearby your property, you will reduce the chance of it potentially falling onto your roof and/or breaking any guttering. Doing so will also protect any tiles from breakages and mould growth that may lead to leaks and further interior damage. 2. Use Starter Shingles to Protect from Extreme Weather Think ahead where you can to protect your roof, even if it means checking the weather forecast. If you spot any loose shingles then you can add roof cement below individual segments to prevent them from falling off during a storm. You could also use starter shingles, these are placed at the edge of the eaves and gutters of your home. They are specifically designed to resist wind damage and protect the edge of the roof and to provide a guide for the correct placement of all the other shingles. If it's the case where you regularly spot shingles falling off your roof, we would recommend completely re-roofing your home. We can provide high-quality shingles, which offer improved wind resistance, a stronger water barrier, and are UV light-resistant. 3. Check Your Loft If you're only going into your loft once a year to get the Christmas decorations down, we suggest you reconsider. Loft spaces are generally safe and easy to inspect, doing so can help you discover any potential damage to your roof. Check for light spots coming through the roof from outdoors when your lights are off, this will help you to identify any cracks in your roof, which may cause leaks during bad weather. We also recommend checking your insulation for any signs of wear and tear, this can happen as a result of leaks; you can read more on insulation here. 4. Regularly Inspect Your Roof We naturally do it, but try not to abandon your roof until you notice a big problem. It's always safer and better in the long-run to arrange regular professional assessments. This can save you a lot of time and money as you can maintain good up-keep of your roof and avoid emergency roofing call outs. This is where we can help, our team are available to carry out routine checks, we can schedule this in for you via enquiry form, email or phone. Please do not attempt to climb onto your roof yourself, this is highly dangerous. Our team have years of experience and health and safety training under their belt to carry this out in the safest way possible. During their visit, they’ll complete an assessment on your roof and complete any required small repairs. If they do find a major issue, they’ll discuss the available options so you can decide whether a replacement or repair is the best solution. We recommend having someone come out to your home once or twice a year to check on your roof; Autumn and Spring are usually the best times for these checks. Outside of these checks, if you notice any damage to your home, or it has been subjected to severe weather conditions, it's best to call our roof repair specialists straight away. 5. Consider the Age of Your Roof We have experienced many cases where new home owners have not considered the age of their roof when moving into their property. In general, roofs are designed to last between 20 to 30 years, after that you'll begin to notice more unwanted roofing issues. To keep in mind the age of your roof, you will be able to provide it with the care and attention it needs for the next few years. When moving into a new home, always ask the previous owners if they’ve had the roof replaced or if they know when it was last inspected or replaced. Preventing unwanted roofing damage is something that any homeowner today should be considering. This can save you a fortune in the long run while also protecting the inside of your home from further damage. We always encourage you to book a regular roofing assessment at least once a year, which can help to identify any damage to your roof and prevent further issues from occurring. The UK is set to experience some extremely cold weather in Winter 2022/23. While this unusually cold and damp weather can be enjoyed in the day, many of us struggle to sleep in uncomfortably cold bedrooms at night. We're here to help you understand how insulating your loft or roof can help you save on energy bills. Why does my home get so cold in Winter? Lofts get very cold in the winter, with temperatures often -5 degrees Celsius. As the sun rarely shines directly onto the roof’s dark surfaces throughout the short days, heat is absorbed and radiated into the roof space. Without adequate insulation, this temperature accumulated in the daytime can quickly transfer into any bedrooms on the upper floor. How does insulation help me save on energy bills? Insulation offers many benefits, reducing heat loss, minimising energy bills and improving our contribution to protecting the environment. By adding insulation to walls, roofs, ceilings and floors, you will be able to reduce your energy bills as it will help your home retain up to 80% of the heating and cooling that would otherwise be lost. It enables you to stay warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer. Is the cost of installing or repairing insulation worth it? The answer is yes, the money you save in the long term will be substantial. How can you stay warm in the winter? Minimising condensation and moisture is a good starting point for keeping warm in the winter. Insulation of hot water pipes and boiler connections to hot water cylinders will help manage internal gains. How can I insulate my home? To insulate a cold house, the best thing to do is purge heat through ventilation. Although easier said than done – particularly in an urban setting – doors, windows and rooflights should be opened to encourage a cross-breeze that replaces the air in the building. This is best done at night, when the air outside is more likely to be cooler than the air inside the house. We also recommend measuring your existing loft insulation. It should be at least 270mm thick. Next, check that the insulation is laid evenly across the loft space and by redistribute it if necessary. If any areas still need a top up, our specialists are on call, so get in touch and we will allocate one of our loft insulation installers to schedule a free onsite inspection and quote.
